Milestones Equestrian Achievement Program is a non-profit therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and seniors located in Independence, Kentucky
Therapeutic riding is horseback riding “for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with challenges.” Students engaged in therapeutic riding learn how to make decisions, maintain focus, and solve problems, while growing in self-confidence, patience and trust. The therapeutic riding program also improves rider posture, range of motion and coordination. Horseback riding moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to walking, so “riders with physical needs often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength.” Our goal is to improve cognitive, physical and psychological function as well as nurture the emotional health of members of our community.
To support this worthwhile mission, a team from Pleasant Run Presbyterian spent a day repairing split rail fences on the farm. We loved improving the home of these special horses.
